RALEIGH, N.C. – Drivers across central North Carolina should brace for a stormy Monday night as rain and thunderstorms build over Wake County. Evening commutes on I-40 and U.S. 70 may slow with downpours and slick pavement, while gusty winds could add hazards for high-profile vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a weak system will bring showers starting late Monday, September 15, with rainfall chances reaching 50% by evening. Thunderstorms could linger through Tuesday morning, producing up to a half-inch of rain across the Triangle. The agency warns of brief ponding on low-lying roads and urges residents to allow extra travel time.

Raleigh’s Monday high will reach near 78 degrees before storms roll in. North winds could gust up to 18 mph, adding to driving challenges during evening rush hour. Tuesday will remain unsettled, with rain possible through midday before skies gradually clear.

Farther west, Durham and Chapel Hill could see similar impacts with heavy showers during the evening commute. To the east, Rocky Mount and Wilson may encounter isolated storms later Monday night, but rainfall totals should remain lighter.

Residents should secure outdoor items, check drainage around properties, and avoid unnecessary travel during downpours. If thunder is heard, move indoors quickly.

Rain chances taper by Wednesday, with cooler, drier air arriving midweek. Highs will hold near 73 Wednesday before climbing back toward the 80s by the weekend.

Warnings remain in effect for central North Carolina until conditions improve Tuesday afternoon.
