MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Rip currents and heavy showers could disrupt both travel and beach plans Tuesday as fall weather grips coastal North Carolina. Drivers along Highway 70 and beachgoers from Carteret to Hatteras counties should expect dangerous surf and wet roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from 8 a.m. through Tuesday evening. Moderate rip currents will pose risks to swimmers and surfers, while scattered showers and possible thunderstorms could cause slick roadways and reduced visibility during the morning commute.
Eastern North Carolina, including Morehead City, Beaufort, and Ocracoke, will see periods of rain and gusty winds as a system pushes onshore. Rainfall amounts may reach up to half an inch, and winds could gust near 20 mph. For drivers, this means extra caution on bridges and low-lying roads.
Beachgoers should avoid swimming in unguarded areas and heed local flag warnings. Even strong swimmers can be caught in rip currents. Emergency managers advise staying out of the water and monitoring NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
Conditions improve midweek, but lingering clouds may stick around until late Wednesday. By Thursday, drier air and partly sunny skies return, giving residents a brief break before another chance of showers Sunday.
Warnings remain active through Tuesday night, and updates will follow if conditions worsen.
