Fayetteville, North Carolina – Drivers across central North Carolina could face prolonged icy conditions as freezing rain continues to create slick roads, sidewalks, and bridges through Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday for Cumberland, Sampson, and Wayne counties. Light freezing rain is producing a thin glaze of ice, enough to create hazardous travel where temperatures remain below freezing, especially on elevated surfaces.

The advisory impacts a broad portion of the region, including Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Spring Lake, Clinton, Roseboro, and Goldsboro. In Cumberland County, untreated roads and overpasses could remain slick during the Monday morning commute, while sidewalks and parking lots may be especially dangerous for pedestrians. Farther east in Wayne County, pockets of freezing rain could continue to recoat roadways, prolonging travel issues into the afternoon.

Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Bridges and shaded roadways are expected to remain icy the longest. Residents are also encouraged to limit unnecessary travel until temperatures rise enough to improve conditions.

The freezing rain threat is expected to gradually diminish as warmer air moves in later Monday, but slick spots may linger even after precipitation ends. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early Monday afternoon, and additional updates may be issued if conditions change.
