NEWPORT, N.C. – The last breath of fall warmth is fading fast across eastern North Carolina this morning, with a sharp chill waiting just behind it. Dew glistens on lawns under clear skies, but by Monday night, that moisture could turn to frost — or even a hard freeze.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a Freeze Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday morning for all of mainland eastern North Carolina, including Greenville, New Bern, Kinston, Jacksonville, and Havelock. Forecasters warn that temperatures could fall into the upper 20s, marking the region’s coldest stretch so far this season.

This will be the first widespread freeze for coastal and inland communities, effectively ending the growing season. Residents are urged to protect plants, pets, and exposed plumbing, especially in low-lying and rural areas where cold air tends to settle. Drivers should also be alert for early-morning frost on windshields and bridges during Tuesday’s commute.

After the front passes, skies will remain sunny but cool, with Veterans Day highs near 47°F and light west winds adding to the chill. The midweek trend turns milder, with sunshine and highs in the low 60s by Wednesday, but another cold push is possible by next weekend.

This week’s pattern shift signals a true fall-to-winter transition for the Carolinas — crisp days, clear nights, and a reminder that frost season has arrived along the coast.
