MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Bitter early-morning air swept across the Crystal Coast Tuesday, leaving frost glistening on docks and rooftops from Atlantic Beach to Newport. Temperatures fell into the low 30s, and inland spots briefly touched freezing as the first major cold snap of the season arrived. The chill feels sharp, dry, and unusually deep for this stretch of November — more like a winter morning than coastal fall.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 8 a.m. for Dare and West Carteret counties, where subfreezing readings near 30°F could harm sensitive vegetation and exposed plumbing. At the same time, a Special Weather Statement highlights an increased fire danger from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as gusty westerly winds and dry air push humidity below 30%. Outdoor burning is discouraged due to the risk of fast-moving brush fires.

Residents should take steps to protect tender plants, bring pets indoors, and avoid using outdoor flames or fire pits until calmer, more humid air returns. The air will stay brisk through midmorning but gradually warms under full sunshine — highs will rebound into the upper 40s to near 50°F by afternoon.

By Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures moderate quickly, reaching the low 60s with light winds and clear skies — perfect for outdoor cleanup or early holiday decorating. After this short but biting freeze, eastern North Carolina should enjoy a mild, sunny stretch through the weekend before the next front approaches closer to Thanksgiving week.
