North Carolina Weather Alert for President’s Day Monday: 55° With Showers and Gusty Winds in Morehead City

North Carolina’s Crystal Coast starts bright and crisp, but a soaking rain is lining up just offshore. Temperatures hover near 27 degrees this morning in Morehead City, and frost still coats docks and rooftops.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, sunshine pushes highs to 56 degrees today with light west winds. Clouds thicken tonight as temperatures fall to around 38. Rain develops Sunday afternoon, mainly after 1 p.m., with chances climbing to 80 percent. By Sunday night, rain becomes steady with a 100 percent chance and lows near 45 degrees.

Plan for wet roads along U.S. 70 and bridges spanning Bogue Sound by late Sunday. Ponding is possible during heavier bursts. While rainfall totals stay around a quarter inch or less Sunday afternoon, additional showers Sunday night could create slick conditions for early Monday travelers.

President’s Day brings a 30 percent chance of lingering showers, mainly before early afternoon. Highs reach near 55 degrees with west winds gusting up to 18 mph. Skies turn mostly cloudy Monday night with lows near 39.

Drier weather returns Tuesday with partial sunshine and highs near 59. By Wednesday, temperatures climb to 65 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. A broader warming trend takes hold late next week, with above-average temperatures building across much of the Southeast and central U.S.
