Raleigh, N.C. – Flooding and strong winds could disrupt travel and cause tree damage across central North Carolina from 2 p.m. to midnight Wednesday, with the Piedmont and Sandhills at greatest risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Flood Watch is in effect from 2 p.m. today through 2 a.m. Thursday, with localized heavy rain and wind gusts up to 60 mph expected. Soils across the region remain saturated from earlier rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Chantal, increasing the likelihood of flash flooding and downed trees—even from sub-severe winds.

Areas most at risk include Chapel Hill, Sanford, Durham, and Fayetteville, where the ground is already unable to absorb additional rainfall. Flash flooding could develop quickly in low-lying or urban areas, especially near creeks and storm drains. Wind gusts may also lead to scattered power outages and blocked roadways due to falling limbs.

Residents should avoid non-essential travel this afternoon, charge devices, and stay weather-aware through the evening. Have alternate power sources and emergency kits ready in case of service disruptions.

More storms are possible overnight, and additional alerts may be issued as the situation evolves.
