Morehead City, N.C. – A dangerous mix of heat and storms is sweeping through eastern North Carolina today, with a Heat Advisory and flash flood threat in effect through tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, parts of the region—including Greenville, Kinston, and Kill Devil Hills—could see rainfall totals over 2 inches and wind gusts strong enough to damage trees and power lines. The heaviest rain and strongest storms are expected from this afternoon into late evening.
The storm system coincides with dangerously high temperatures. Much of the eastern coastal plain, from Jacksonville to Elizabeth City, is under “major” heat risk, with feels-like temperatures exceeding 100°F. Without proper cooling or hydration, residents face serious health risks. Sensitive populations, including the elderly and those with chronic conditions, should take extra precautions.
Flood-prone areas, especially near Belhaven, Plymouth, and Rodanthe, could experience rapid water rise. Motorists should avoid driving through flooded roads. Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, charge devices, and prepare for possible power outages.
Both heat and storm threats are expected to diminish overnight, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
