Raleigh, NC – Flood concerns persist across central North Carolina as rounds of heavy rain continue into Wednesday, with flood-prone areas at elevated risk for flash flooding and potential weak tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Flood Watch remains in effect through 2 a.m. Wednesday for Raleigh, Durham, and surrounding counties including Wake, Orange, Johnston, Franklin, and Granville. Storm totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with up to 4 inches possible in localized areas. Flash flooding may develop rapidly if storms repeatedly hit the same locations.
Drivers along I-40, U.S. 1, and NC-147 should be especially cautious Tuesday night into Wednesday. Excessive runoff could overwhelm creeks, streams, and underpasses. Avoid driving through water-covered roads and monitor real-time updates from local emergency management.
Wednesday’s outlook includes showers likely and a few thunderstorms after 9 a.m., with clearing expected later in the day. While skies may briefly brighten, unstable conditions linger into the evening. An isolated weak tornado cannot be ruled out.
