Florence, NC – North Carolina residents are experiencing their first taste of summer as temperatures surged into the 90s across southeastern parts of the state Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, high temperatures reached 91°F in Florence, while Lumberton, Marion, and Hartsville each hit 90°F—well above early April averages. The unseasonably warm weather was paired with mostly sunny skies and wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph in some areas.
The heat is expected to be short-lived, however. A strong cold front is forecast to move through the region Monday into Monday night, bringing showers and isolated thunderstorms. While no severe weather alerts have been issued yet, residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts for updates.
Counties including Robeson, Dillon, and Horry may see rapidly changing weather conditions as the front approaches. Wilmington peaked at a milder 83°F Sunday, with Surf City and Southport remaining in the 70s thanks to cooler coastal influence.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and secure any loose outdoor objects due to gusty winds. The upcoming front could bring a temporary cooldown with highs returning to more seasonable levels by midweek.
