Raleigh, N.C. – The sun will rise Thursday over a crisp, clear sky — but the calm look hides a dangerous setup. A potent mix of gusty winds, bone-dry air, and falling humidity will make for an elevated fire risk across central North Carolina, including the Raleigh–Durham area, through this evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, winds will increase by midmorning, gusting between 25 and 30 mph at times as relative humidity drops near 25%. That combination will dry vegetation quickly, creating ideal conditions for fires to spread if any open burning occurs. The agency has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook and a Special Weather Statement urging residents in Wake, Johnston, Harnett, and Chatham counties — as well as much of the central Piedmont — to avoid burning leaves, brush, or debris until winds ease.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and those using grills or fire pits should monitor embers closely. Drivers should also avoid discarding cigarettes on road shoulders, as small sparks could ignite roadside grass. Conditions will improve late Thursday night as winds weaken and humidity begins to recover.
Friday will bring calmer, bright skies and highs near 66°, marking a more comfortable stretch through the weekend. Saturday looks seasonably cool and mostly sunny — ideal for fall cleanup or early Halloween decorating. Beyond the weekend, models hint at a wetter pattern returning early next week, possibly bringing needed rainfall to ease the fire risk across the Carolinas. Still, today’s pattern is a sharp reminder: one spark in this dry fall air could travel fast.
