Morehead City, N.C. – Meteorologists are closely monitoring a tropical disturbance in the Eastern Atlantic with an 80% chance of developing into a cyclone over the next several days, according to the National Hurricane Center. While the system does not pose an immediate threat to the United States, officials are urging North Carolinians to stay weather-aware as the peak of hurricane season arrives.

According to the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City, the disturbance is showing strong signs of organization and could become a tropical depression or storm before the weekend. The broad area of concern is several hundred miles off the African coast, but forecasters warn that conditions in the Atlantic remain favorable for strengthening.

Emergency managers in North Carolina stress now is the time to review hurricane safety plans, check emergency supplies, and be prepared for possible updates if the system shifts closer to the East Coast. Even storms that form far out in the Atlantic can impact the Carolinas with heavy surf, rip currents, and dangerous swells days in advance.

Forecasters emphasize that no direct impacts are expected in the state this week, but additional advisories may be issued as the storm develops.
