Charlotte, NC – Thick fog hangs low across the Queen City this morning, blurring headlights and streetlights into a dull haze. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Mecklenburg and Union counties, warning of visibility dropping to one-quarter mile or less through 7 a.m. Monday.
Motorists on I-85, I-77, and U.S. 74 should expect dangerously low visibility, especially in northern and eastern parts of Mecklenburg County. The fog could expand toward the greater Charlotte metro before sunrise, creating hazardous driving conditions during the early commute.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra stopping distance. Travel times could increase across the metro area until the fog lifts midmorning.
Later today, clouds thicken as a 70% chance of rain moves into the region. Highs near 40°F keep it chilly, but by Tuesday, skies clear and temperatures rebound into the mid-40s. Sunshine dominates Wednesday and Thursday, with highs reaching the mid-50s, before another weak front passes by the weekend.
Meteorologists say this week marks a classic early December transition — fog and rain now, sunshine midweek, and cooler air likely to return by Saturday. Farther north, a developing winter system could bring snow to parts of the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes between Dec. 11–17, signaling broader seasonal changes ahead.
For now, drivers should take extra care this morning and prepare for wet roads later today as the fog gives way to light rain.
