Newport, NC – North Carolina residents and visitors should prepare for continued warm temperatures and life-threatening rip currents along the coast. The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City issued a warning on Saturday, urging beachgoers to exercise caution.
According to the NWS, overnight temperatures will drop to the mid-70s inland and near 80 along the coast. Daytime highs are expected to reach the low 90s through Tuesday, with slight cooling into the high 80s by midweek. Rain is anticipated on Wednesday, with a 50% chance of showers, increasing to 55% on Thursday and Friday.
A rip current risk remains high from Oregon Inlet to Surf City, with life-threatening conditions likely in the surf zone. The threat extends to Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Rodanthe, and Hatteras Village. Moderate risk areas include Pine Knoll Shores, Emerald Isle, and Atlantic Beach, where life-threatening rip currents are possible.
The NWS advises avoiding swimming near jetties and piers, where rip currents often occur. Beachgoers are urged to heed local advisories and stay informed via weather updates.
Warm and clear conditions will persist, with temperatures around 77 degrees overnight. Monday and Tuesday will see highs of 93 and 92 degrees, respectively, followed by cooler temperatures and rain later in the week.
