Raleigh, N.C. – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across central North Carolina this afternoon, bringing damaging winds and brief downpours to cities including Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro between 2 p.m. and midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) has been issued for much of the Piedmont and Sandhills regions today, Wednesday, June 25. The primary threat comes from downburst winds capable of gusts over 60 mph, with the strongest activity expected during the late afternoon and evening hours.

The storm zone includes major hubs such as Fayetteville, Asheboro, and Sanford, as well as key highways like I-40, I-85, and US-421. While the tornado and hail risks remain low, power outages and tree damage are possible with fast-moving storms. Emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid travel during peak storm hours if possible.

This is the first organized severe storm event in several weeks for the central part of the state. It follows a stretch of dry and warm weather that may increase the risk of rapid storm development.

Severe weather alerts remain active until midnight. Residents should monitor local media and weather apps for warnings as conditions evolve.
