Charlotte, N.C. – Cooler air is on the way for North Carolina, setting up a major September shift just after Labor Day. Travelers and holiday events across Charlotte and surrounding Mecklenburg County will see a big change after Monday’s sunshine, when a pocket of fall-like air moves south.

According to the National Weather Service, Charlotte will enjoy a sunny Labor Day with highs near 80. But by Tuesday night, temperatures will dip into the low 60s as a broader cool-air mass pushes into the Carolinas. Drivers along I-77 and I-85 should anticipate calmer conditions during the holiday but be alert for patchy fog and wet pavement from scattered showers late Wednesday.

The shift follows a national trend. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook shows a widespread cool-down across much of the Midwest and East, with some areas dipping into the 40s overnight. While North Carolina will stay slightly warmer than its northern neighbors, the arrival of cooler, drier air will mark an early taste of fall.

Residents should plan accordingly: keep light jackets ready for evening events, and check weather updates if traveling north where the cool air will hit harder.

Warnings are not in place now, but meteorologists advise monitoring midweek for any new advisories as showers return Wednesday night.

Five-Day Forecast for Charlotte, N.C.:
