Morehead City, N.C. – Coastal flooding and dangerous beach conditions are expected to continue through Thursday night across eastern North Carolina, with the National Weather Service warning of hazardous surf, rip currents, and high water along sounds and inlets.
According to the National Weather Service office in Newport, a Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday for Carteret County, including Morehead City, Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, and Emerald Isle. Minor to locally moderate flooding could affect low-lying roads near Bogue Sound, the Newport River, and the Neuse River.
High surf advisories also remain in place, with waves up to 8 feet creating life-threatening rip currents from Cape Lookout to Surf City. Swimmers are strongly advised to avoid the water. In addition, minor beach erosion is possible during high tides, especially along east-facing beaches.
Thunderstorms remain possible through Thursday afternoon, with locally heavy rainfall bringing additional street flooding risks. Winds could gust near 25 mph, further complicating marine travel. The U.S. Coast Guard is urging boaters to remain in port until conditions improve.
Hazardous conditions are expected to gradually ease late Thursday, though warnings may be extended if surf and water levels remain elevated.
