WILMINGTON, N.C. – Southeastern North Carolina enters the first week of fall with a subtle but important weather concern for coastal communities. By Monday evening, minor flooding could develop along the Cape Fear River as higher tides arrive with the new moon. Drivers using River Road (U.S. 421) and nearby low-lying streets should prepare for possible evening water on roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the threat begins late Sunday and grows into early next week. The combination of astronomical high tides and onshore winds may lead to nuisance flooding from downtown Wilmington south to Carolina Beach. While conditions will not meet major flood thresholds, residents should move vehicles from flood-prone lots and avoid driving through standing water.

Overall, much of the region stays quiet through the weekend. Saturday brings patchy morning fog followed by sunshine, with highs near 85. Sunday continues dry and mostly sunny, though breezy conditions may push gusts to 17 mph.

Looking ahead, Wilmington and surrounding areas will see mostly sunny skies through Wednesday with highs in the mid-80s. Humidity remains moderate, and overnight lows settle in the upper 60s. By Thursday, scattered showers and isolated storms return, with rain chances climbing into Friday.

Residents should monitor the Cape Fear River closely at evening high tides, particularly from late Sunday into midweek. While widespread flooding is not expected, localized water on roads may impact commutes and evening travel.
