WILMINGTON, N.C. — Residents along the Cape Fear River and low-lying areas of Wilmington should prepare for minor coastal flooding early this morning as high tide combines with elevated water levels. The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory, in effect from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday, for parts of New Hanover County.

Up to half a foot of water above ground level is expected in flood-prone areas, including USS North Carolina Road, Battleship Road, and sections of Water Street near downtown Wilmington. Commuters are urged to avoid flooded streets and allow extra travel time as water from storm drains begins to back up during the morning high tide cycle. Drivers should never cross barricades or flooded intersections, as even shallow water can cause vehicles to stall.

By midmorning, waters will begin to recede, and sunny skies will take over. Temperatures will rise to around 71°F, making for a calm, pleasant Thursday after the early coastal issues clear.

Looking ahead, the weekend brings beautiful fall conditions, with highs near 73°F Saturday and 78°F Sunday, perfect for beach walks or downtown fall festivals. Minor coastal flooding may continue at high tide through the weekend, though impacts should remain limited.

Next week looks dry and mild, with highs in the mid-70s and clear skies — ideal for late-October outdoor events across southeastern North Carolina.
