Charlotte, North Carolina – The arrival of winter will be felt across North Carolina this weekend as the winter solstice arrives Saturday, marking the shortest day of the year and signaling a longer stretch of cold nights that can strain homes and plumbing. While temperatures may fluctuate in the near term, state officials are urging residents to prepare now, especially with colder air typical of January not far off.

According to the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal and emergency management partners, frozen pipes remain one of the most common winter hazards during extended cold spells. Officials warn that pipes in unheated spaces such as crawl spaces, garages, and attics are especially vulnerable when overnight temperatures dip near or below freezing.

In the Charlotte area, homeowners are encouraged to insulate exposed pipes, seal cracks that allow cold air inside, and locate their main water shut-off valve before problems arise. Letting faucets drip slightly during colder nights and opening cabinet doors under sinks can help keep warmer air circulating around plumbing, particularly along exterior walls.

Fire officials stress that open flames should never be used to thaw frozen pipes. Devices such as blowtorches, propane heaters, or charcoal stoves pose serious fire risks and can cause more damage than the freeze itself.

With winter officially beginning and January’s colder pattern still ahead, state officials say now is the time to prepare. Additional cold weather advisories or safety reminders may be issued as winter progresses across North Carolina.
