Waynesville, NC – Snow-covered roads and wind gusts up to 50 mph will create dangerous travel conditions across Western North Carolina’s mountain counties through midnight Monday night, threatening both commutes and power lines.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Haywood, Madison and Yancey counties. Valley locations can expect 1 to 3 inches of snow, while higher elevations along the Tennessee border may see 4 to 7 inches, with isolated higher totals possible. Strong winds Sunday night into Monday could intensify blowing snow and sharply reduce visibility.

Communities including Waynesville, Canton, Burnsville, Marshall, Mars Hill and Hot Springs will likely see accumulating snow on secondary roads and untreated surfaces. Higher terrain near the Tennessee line, including areas around Celo, Cruso and Waterville, faces the greatest risk of heavier snowfall and tree damage from wind.

Drivers should anticipate slick roads for both the Monday morning and evening commutes. Scattered power outages are possible as gusty winds stress tree limbs and power lines. Residents are urged to charge devices, secure outdoor items and check 511 for updated road conditions before traveling.

Snow and gusty winds are expected to ease after midnight Monday night, but additional advisories could follow if conditions worsen.
