North Carolina – Dry air and crisp temperatures are creating a volatile setup across central parts of the state this morning, where a cold start near 32°F is quickly giving way to elevated wildfire risk by late morning. The air feels light and dry, and any spark could spread fast.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, an increased fire danger is in effect from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m., with relative humidity dropping between 20% and 35%. Combined with dry fuels, this raises the risk for rapid fire spread across counties including Wake, Durham, Johnston, and Guilford. A statewide burn ban remains in place, and any outdoor burning is illegal.

Across North Carolina, the pattern is shifting quickly. Calm winds early will turn southerly by afternoon, pushing temperatures to 64°F in Raleigh. By Monday, that warmth surges to 75°F under mostly sunny skies, with dry conditions continuing.

Drivers along I-40 and I-440 should remain alert for reduced visibility if smoke develops from any brush fires. Avoid parking on dry grass, and properly discard cigarettes. Even small sparks can ignite quickly in these conditions.

By Tuesday, temperatures jump to around 80°F, marking a near summer-like stretch. The pattern turns more active by Wednesday afternoon, when scattered showers and thunderstorms develop after 2 p.m., with highs reaching 83°F. Storm chances increase into the evening, with rain continuing into the night.

Residents should stay weather-aware as conditions shift from fire risk to storm potential within days. More advisories could follow as midweek approaches.
