North Carolina – Cold air presses in from the sound this morning, rattling docks and biting exposed skin along the Crystal Coast. Frost clings to windshields, and the breeze off the water sharpens the chill as eastern North Carolina starts the day under winter conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, temperatures near Newport began the morning around 25 degrees, with wind chills dipping close to the lower 20s. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through late morning. Frostbite and hypothermia are possible with prolonged exposure, especially for anyone working outdoors or near the water.

Across Carteret, Craven, and Pamlico counties, dry roads help limit major travel problems. Still, early drivers should watch bridges and causeways for patchy slick spots where cold air settles fastest. North winds gusting over 20 mph at times add to the bite, particularly along U.S. 70 and exposed coastal routes.

Conditions improve steadily as the day goes on. Sunshine dominates, and highs reach the mid-30s. Tonight stays cold, with lows dropping into the low 20s, allowing another round of refreeze in low-lying areas.

A noticeable pattern change arrives Monday. Temperatures rebound into the mid-40s under bright skies. By Tuesday, a warm front lifts north, pushing highs close to 60 degrees. That warmth feels dramatic after the cold start to February.

Midweek turns milder but more unsettled. Wednesday brings increasing clouds and a chance of rain, with highs climbing into the low 60s. Wet roads combined with cooler nights could still create slick conditions after sunset.

Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook favors above-normal temperatures, signaling a sustained late-winter thaw for eastern North Carolina.
