Greensboro, N.C. – Residents from central North Carolina to western Virginia and parts of eastern West Virginia should remain alert this afternoon as severe storms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail move through the region.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Tornado Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. EDT Friday. The alert covers a wide swath from near Greensboro, N.C., north to Elkins, W.Va., and includes Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Charleston. Forecasters warn of isolated tornadoes, wind gusts reaching 70 mph, and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
Storms are expected to form along a frontal boundary, with conditions favorable for rotation and strong wind bands. Travel may be hazardous on I-40, I-77, and I-81 as storms intensify this evening. Power outages and downed trees are also possible. Residents should ensure cell phones are charged and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts.
This is the second active Tornado Watch across the region today. Additional warnings may be issued as conditions evolve. Remain weather-aware and take shelter immediately if a warning is issued in your area.
