Raleigh, NC – Residents along the North Carolina and Virginia coasts are bracing for a dangerous combination of heavy rain, flash flooding, and hazardous marine conditions today, Monday, September 15.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, portions of eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia have been upgraded to a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall. Forecasters warn that thunderstorms tied to offshore low pressure could bring 3 to 5 inches of rain, with localized amounts even higher. Scattered flash flooding is possible, particularly in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.

The National Weather Service offices in Newport/Morehead City, NC, and Wakefield, VA, have issued multiple Gale Warnings for coastal waters and inland sounds. Winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 knots, with gusts topping 40 knots in some areas. Seas offshore could climb to 15 feet, while sounds and rivers experience rough and hazardous waters. The strongest conditions are expected through tonight, with warnings in effect until Tuesday morning.

Officials caution that such winds and seas could capsize small craft, damage vessels, and reduce visibility. Mariners are urged to remain in port and secure equipment until conditions improve.

Residents from Cape Lookout, NC, to the Virginia border—including the Outer Banks, Albemarle Sound, Pamlico Sound, and Currituck Sound—should prepare for flooding on roads, hazardous surf, and potential travel delays.
