Blacksburg, Virginia – Tree limbs could snap and isolated outages are possible across Southwest Virginia Saturday as gusty northwest winds ramp up through the late morning and midday hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, gusts of 30 to 40 mph will continue into the afternoon across much of Virginia, West Virginia, and northern North Carolina. The strongest winds are expected along higher elevations, particularly near Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Bluefield, where peak gusts may top 35 mph before gradually calming after sunset.

Drivers on Interstate 81 and US-460 should brace for difficult travel conditions, especially in open areas and mountain passes. Winds may shove around unsecured outdoor items, and high-profile vehicles could struggle to stay steady on exposed roadways.

Cities like Lexington (32 mph), Lewisburg (34 mph), and Wytheville (35 mph) are all within the highest wind zone. Scattered power interruptions are possible if tree limbs fall onto power lines. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, trampolines, or anything that might blow away.

Winds will ease after dark, but breezy conditions may linger into early Sunday. Stay alert — additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
