Richmond, VA – A Flood Watch is in effect today across large portions of Virginia and parts of northern North Carolina, with forecasters warning of possible flash flooding from heavy rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service, eastern and southeastern Virginia — including Hampton Roads, the Tidewater region, Hopewell, and Petersburg — will be under a Flood Watch from noon Saturday through this evening. Excessive runoff could flood rivers, creeks, streams, and urban areas with poor drainage.
Meanwhile, a second Flood Watch issued by the National Weather Service in Blacksburg covers south-central Virginia and counties along the North Carolina border until noon Saturday. That area includes Lynchburg, Danville, Martinsville, and nearby North Carolina counties such as Rockingham, Stokes, and Caswell. Meteorologists say rain rates could reach up to 3 inches per hour in the heaviest storms.
Drivers in low-lying areas are urged to use caution, as sudden downpours could create dangerous conditions. Flooding may also affect morning and evening commutes in cities including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Chesapeake, and Suffolk.
Residents are advised to stay alert for possible Flood Warnings later today and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
