Richmond, VA – Breezy weather and dry conditions are combining to raise the fire danger along the North Carolina-Virginia border this Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, VA, wind gusts are expected to reach up to 30 mph throughout the day. The most at-risk areas include the Eastern Piedmont region of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, where recent rainfall was significantly lower late Thursday into Friday.
Localities under heightened fire risk include Richmond, South Hill, Emporia, and extending south to Elizabeth City and Windsor, NC. Cities such as Farmville and Norfolk are also seeing gusts between 28 and 33 mph. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 60s and low 70s, further contributing to the dry and windy conditions fueling fire concerns.
Officials advise residents to avoid outdoor burning and to properly extinguish cigarettes and campfires. Loose debris, fallen branches, and dry grass can easily ignite and spread rapidly under current wind patterns.
The fire danger is expected to persist through Saturday evening. Authorities will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if red flag warnings become necessary. For ongoing safety alerts, visit weather.gov/akq.
