Richmond, Va. – A dangerous stretch of extreme heat will continue into Monday evening across much of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, with heat index values soaring as high as 107°F in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, an Extreme Heat Warning expired Sunday at 8 p.m., but a Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Monday for more than 30 counties and cities, including Virginia Beach, Richmond, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Hertford, NC.
The advisory covers inland and coastal zones, where the combination of high humidity and temperatures in the upper 90s is expected to push “feels like” values well above 100°F. Cities such as Hopewell, Petersburg, and Elizabeth City could see the worst heat during the afternoon commute hours Monday.
Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat, drink plenty of fluids, and check on older neighbors or those without air conditioning. Public cooling centers are open in multiple jurisdictions.
The advisory is set to expire Monday evening, but forecasters warn additional alerts could be issued if oppressive conditions persist into Tuesday.
