Raleigh, N.C. – A tornado watch is in effect for central North Carolina through 8 p.m. Friday, with severe storms possible across the Triad and Triangle regions.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 348 includes 20 counties, stretching from Watauga and Wilkes in the northwest to Wake and Durham in the east. Strong thunderstorms could produce tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail this afternoon and evening.

Cities under the watch include Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Durham, Raleigh, and Asheboro. Interstate corridors like I-40, I-85, and U.S. 421 could see rapid weather changes, impacting afternoon commutes and early evening travel. Outdoor activities and high school events should be postponed or moved indoors.

Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts, identify safe shelter locations, and ensure phones and emergency radios are fully charged. Mobile homes and outdoor structures are particularly vulnerable.

This watch follows a week of unsettled weather across the Southeast and may be upgraded if storm conditions intensify. Stay tuned to local alerts, as additional warnings could be issued throughout the evening.
