Raleigh, NC – A tornado watch is in effect for central and eastern North Carolina, including cities such as Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Greenville, until 1 a.m. Monday. Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail are expected to move through the region overnight.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City, strong storms are advancing from the Wilmington area northward, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds up to 70 mph. Forecasters warn that a couple of tornadoes could develop within the watch area, along with isolated hail as large as ping-pong balls.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware overnight and have multiple ways to receive alerts, including NOAA weather radios, emergency alerts, and local news sources. The NWS emphasizes the importance of ensuring at least one warning method can wake residents in the event of an emergency.

Potential impacts include downed trees, power outages, and hazardous travel conditions. Those in mobile homes or weaker structures should have a safety plan in place and be ready to seek sturdy shelter if a tornado warning is issued.

The tornado watch affects over 6.7 million people, including nearly 1,700 schools and 99 hospitals. Authorities recommend securing loose outdoor objects and avoiding travel during severe weather conditions.
