Raleigh, N.C. – A line of dangerous thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning to much of central and eastern North Carolina through 10 p.m. Saturday, with Wake, Durham, and Halifax counties among the 20 now under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch went into effect at 3:20 p.m. EDT and includes a wide area from the Triangle to the northeastern corner of the state. Residents in cities like Raleigh, Durham, Rocky Mount, and Elizabeth City are urged to monitor conditions closely as storms build through the early evening.
Gusts over 60 mph and hail up to one inch are possible, especially along the I-85 and U.S. 64 corridors. Power outages and downed trees could occur, particularly in areas where grounds remain saturated from recent rain. Emergency managers recommend staying indoors, securing outdoor objects, and avoiding unnecessary travel during storm activity.
This marks one of the more widespread thunderstorm watches issued this July, affecting both inland counties and parts of the Albemarle region near the coast.
Severe weather alerts remain in place through 10 p.m., and additional warnings could be issued if storms intensify or shift westward.
