Charlotte, N.C. – A wide swath of western and central North Carolina is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8 p.m. Friday, with storms likely to bring damaging winds, hail, and intense lightning to cities including Charlotte, Hickory, and Statesville.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers 16 counties, including Mecklenburg, Gaston, Burke, and Rowan. Thunderstorms developing this afternoon could produce wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to an inch in diameter.
Strong cells are already forming near the foothills, with radar indicating movement toward I-85 and I-77 corridors. Drivers should expect reduced visibility, ponding on roads, and rapid weather changes through the evening commute. Emergency officials urge residents to secure loose outdoor items and avoid sheltering under trees during storms.
Schools and outdoor activities in cities like Mooresville, Lincolnton, and Concord may see delays or cancellations if storms intensify. The National Weather Service warns that additional watches or warnings could be issued later today.
Storm conditions are expected to ease after sunset, but lightning risks may linger. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and monitor local alerts through the evening.
