Morehead City, N.C. – Scattered thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across eastern North Carolina Friday afternoon as heat builds into the low 90s. Coastal cities may see the strongest storms, bringing lightning and downpours through this evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, highs will climb into the mid-80s to near 90°, with partly to mostly cloudy skies. The greatest storm activity is expected after 2 p.m., especially along the coast and Outer Banks. The primary threats include heavy rainfall and frequent lightning.
Localized flooding could impact low-lying roads, especially in areas like Beaufort, Havelock, and Jacksonville. Lightning could delay outdoor events or beach plans, and residents are urged to head indoors at the first sound of thunder. If you lose power, be sure to keep phones charged and avoid using generators indoors.
Friday marks another repeat of the week’s pattern, with hot, humid days fueling late-day storms. Conditions may improve overnight, but additional storm chances remain in the weekend outlook.
More updates may follow later today if severe warnings are issued.
