Wilmington, North Carolina – A scorching heat wave is tightening its grip on southeastern North Carolina, with heat index values forecast to exceed 110° by mid-afternoon Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, across New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, Robeson, and Pender counties. The Heat Advisory expires at 10 a.m. Tuesday, transitioning to more severe conditions.

Daytime highs on Wednesday will approach 97°F, but the combination of high humidity and sun will push the heat index as high as 110°F. Residents in Wilmington, Burgaw, and along US-74 and NC-133 should take immediate precautions. Limit time outdoors, wear light clothing, and stay hydrated. Cars can reach lethal temperatures in minutes.

Short bursts of relief may come Wednesday evening, with a 30% chance of thunderstorms after 2 p.m., though these may bring brief, localized gusts or lightning rather than meaningful cooling.

Utilities may see surging demand. Officials advise charging devices early, checking on elderly neighbors, and avoiding strenuous activity from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

⚠️ Heat illnesses escalate quickly during prolonged exposure. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and seek shade immediately if symptoms appear.

More heat is likely through the weekend, with only minor relief ahead. Another round of storms is possible by late Sunday.
