Wilmington, North Carolina – Torrential heat and flash flood threats are gripping coastal North Carolina this week, with Wilmington residents facing a triple-weather threat Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, an Excessive Heat Warning, Severe Thunderstorm Watch, and Coastal Flood Advisory remain in effect across southeastern North Carolina through Thursday morning. Dangerous heat index values up to 114°F and scattered severe storms could disrupt afternoon travel, while high tide flooding is expected along the Lower Cape Fear River near Market Street tonight.

Temperatures Thursday will climb to 93°F, with heat index values exceeding 107°F before storms develop after 2 p.m. The NWS has warned of strong wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and lightning through Thursday evening. Residents should limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.

Coastal flooding remains a risk near downtown Wilmington, particularly along Market Street, Water Street, and the U.S. North Carolina Railroad corridor. Water may back up onto roadways during high tide between 9 PM Wednesday and 1 AM Thursday, with minor inundation in low-lying areas.

Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel during storm periods, check forecasts frequently, and prepare for possible power disruptions.

Warnings may be extended into Friday, especially if heat and storm patterns persist. Another surge of afternoon storms is expected Friday and Sunday.
