Charlotte, NC – Severe weather continues to batter central North Carolina, with multiple tornadoes confirmed across the region. As storms and showers persist, a Flood Watch remains in effect for eastern sections of the state, particularly east of US-1.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, surveys have identified tornadoes in Franklin and Wilson counties. Preliminary data reveals that these tornadoes, spawned by Tropical Storm Debby, ranged in intensity from EF-0 to EF-3. The most severe tornado was an EF-3, which struck Wilson County early Thursday morning, with peak winds reaching 140 mph. This tornado traveled six miles, leaving one person dead and significant damage in its wake.
Meanwhile, Franklin County experienced three separate tornadoes. The strongest, an EF-1, had peak winds of 105 mph and tracked 2.9 miles. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in these areas.
Showers and storms are expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the threat of localized flash flooding in urban areas. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas, and to avoid driving through flooded roads.
