Wilmington, N.C. – Scattered thunderstorms could bring brief downpours and gusty winds across southeastern North Carolina Tuesday afternoon, with the strongest storms expected between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a marginal risk of severe weather is in place for much of the region on May 20, with isolated strong storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and small hail. Rain chances range from 20–40% across southeastern NC and northeastern South Carolina, with highs climbing into the mid to upper 80s.

Communities along the coast, including Wilmington, Southport, and Myrtle Beach, may stay slightly cooler than inland areas but could still see pop-up storms during the evening commute. Localized ponding on roads is possible where heavier cells move through, especially in poor drainage areas.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, especially if planning outdoor activities Tuesday afternoon. Charge phones and secure lightweight outdoor objects in case of sudden gusts. Boaters should monitor conditions closely as isolated storms could impact nearshore waters.

The threat of storms will diminish after sunset. More updates may follow if storm development becomes more organized later in the day.
