Charlotte, North Carolina – Spring storms could stall weekend plans across the Charlotte metro as thunderstorms develop Saturday afternoon, with lingering showers expected into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, a 50% chance of thunderstorms begins after 2 p.m. Saturday, with gusty southwest winds up to 22 mph and brief heavy downpours possible. A more widespread round of rain is likely Saturday night, when the chance of showers increases to 80%, particularly between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Motorists using I-77 and I-85 should prepare for reduced visibility and slick pavement late Saturday into early Sunday. Flash flooding isn’t likely, but heavier bursts of rain during thunderstorms may temporarily overwhelm drains in low-lying areas.

Sunday will see lingering showers, mainly after 11 a.m., with temps holding near 76°F. While storms become less organized, some thunder is still possible until evening.

By Monday, skies begin to clear but a few scattered showers may linger through the morning. Temperatures will rebound into the upper 70s Monday and Tuesday, offering a dry stretch midweek before rain chances rise again by Thursday.
