North Carolina greets the morning with still air and muted skies, but danger is already lining up. Pavement feels cold underfoot, and trees stand ready to collect ice once precipitation begins. Meteorologists are tracking a significant Winter Weather Alert that will rapidly intensify later today.
An Ice Storm Warning is now in effect across much of western and central North Carolina, Upstate South Carolina, and northeast Georgia. Precipitation develops this afternoon, but conditions deteriorate sharply tonight. Ice accumulations of one-half to three-quarters of an inch are expected across the Piedmont, including Charlotte, Gastonia, Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Rock Hill. In foothills and mountain locations, ice may approach one inch, combined with sleet and snow up to two inches.
Once ice builds, impacts escalate fast. Power lines sag, trees crack, and roads glaze over. Travel may become impossible, especially after dark. Late tonight into Sunday morning is the most dangerous window, when ice accumulation accelerates. Gusty winds up to 40–45 mph in higher elevations will worsen tree damage and outages.
To be fair, some valleys may briefly mix with rain Sunday, but colder air returns quickly. Flash freezing Sunday night could lock ice back onto untreated roads, creating treacherous conditions into the Monday commute. Officials warn outages could last days in hardest-hit areas.
Residents should complete preparations now. Avoid unnecessary travel, charge devices, and secure loose outdoor items. Keep flashlights, blankets, food, and water accessible. Check on elderly neighbors and use heating sources safely.
This storm lingers through Monday afternoon, with lingering road hazards and restoration efforts extending beyond.
