Charlotte, N.C. – Sunshine is taking over the Carolinas late Monday morning, but don’t let the bright skies fool you. The afternoon will turn hot and humid, and another stretch of unsettled summer weather is already lining up for the middle of the week. Roads will be dry for much of today, but drivers could encounter quick downpours and lightning as the pattern shifts by Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, Charlotte will reach 93 degrees Monday, with heat index values climbing as high as 100 degrees this afternoon. Only a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected after 2 p.m., meaning many neighborhoods stay dry while a few experience brief heavy rain and lightning.
Tuesday keeps the heat in place with another high near 93 degrees and a heat index around 101 degrees. Storm chances remain limited during the day, but attention quickly turns to Wednesday as moisture increases ahead of a cold front. Rain chances climb to 60% Wednesday afternoon and 90% Wednesday night, when showers and thunderstorms become much more widespread.
While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, a few stronger storms could produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, localized flooding, and brief travel disruptions. An isolated tornado cannot be completely ruled out with stronger thunderstorms, although the overall risk remains low at this time.
Motorists traveling along Interstates 77, 85, and 485 should be prepared for rapidly changing visibility during heavier downpours Wednesday afternoon and evening. If thunder roars, move indoors and postpone outdoor activities until storms pass. Stay hydrated through the early-week heat and limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon temperatures.
By Thursday, temperatures ease into the lower 80s, but showers remain likely as the unsettled pattern continues across the Charlotte metro and nearby Upstate South Carolina.
