Raleigh, N.C. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit central North Carolina on Friday, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging wind gusts, and a chance for isolated tornadoes, particularly in the late afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, counties from Durham and Wake to Cumberland and Sampson should prepare for strong storms beginning after 5 p.m. Friday. Wind gusts may exceed 25 mph, with rainfall amounts ranging from a quarter to a half inch in some areas. Spotter activation may be needed.

In Raleigh, residents can expect thunderstorms Friday with highs near 81°F, followed by continued storm activity overnight. Cities such as Durham, Fayetteville, and Rocky Mount are also at risk for hail and hazardous winds. Saturday brings another round of storms, mainly after sunset, although the threat is lower.

Drivers should avoid flooded roads and secure outdoor items ahead of the storms. Power outages and downed trees are possible in areas hit hardest by wind or hail.

The severe weather threat continues through Saturday night, with conditions expected to improve by Sunday. Additional advisories may be issued if the storm intensifies.
