Wilmington, N.C. – Damaging winds and large hail could hit parts of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina Sunday afternoon and evening as a line of severe storms develops east of I-95.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, storms are expected to intensify after 2 p.m. and may bring wind gusts over 60 mph and quarter-sized hail, especially in areas along and east of I-95, including Jacksonville, Myrtle Beach, and Lumberton. A marginal risk for severe weather remains in place through Sunday night.
Rip current risks are also elevated along the Carolina coast, particularly from Cape Fear to North Myrtle Beach, where surf conditions are expected to become hazardous. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and remain aware of changing conditions, as strong currents and rough waves may persist into the evening.
Residents should secure outdoor objects, monitor weather alerts, and prepare for sudden power outages or downed trees. Travelers along U.S. 17 and other coastal routes may encounter reduced visibility and slick roads during passing storms.
Storm chances will taper off late Sunday night, but hazardous surf could continue into Monday. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
