Winston-Salem, North Carolina – Strong thunderstorms are sweeping across northwestern North Carolina, threatening dangerous winds, hail, and power outages through 10 p.m. Wednesday. Counties including Ashe, Surry, and Rockingham could see downed trees, road hazards, and scattered power disruptions as the storms intensify late this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for Alleghany, Ashe, Caswell, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties until 10 p.m. EDT. The most severe weather is expected along the US 421 and I-77 corridors, especially during rush hour.

In cities like Mount Airy, Boone, and Yadkinville, emergency managers warn residents to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and prepare for sudden wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. Large hail and isolated flash flooding are also possible, particularly in low-lying and rural areas. Duke Energy and local utilities are bracing for potential outages, while area schools and businesses may adjust evening activities.

This is the first major severe thunderstorm event for northwest North Carolina in July, reminiscent of similar outbreaks seen last summer. Residents should monitor local alerts and avoid unnecessary travel until storms pass.

Storm watches may be extended or upgraded as the situation evolves.
