Morehead City, North Carolina – Dangerous surf conditions and incoming rain could disrupt beach plans in eastern North Carolina starting Sunday, with Memorial Day storms on the way.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Moderate Rip Current Risk remains in effect through Saturday evening for West Carteret, East Carteret, and nearby Outer Banks beaches. Swimmers at Bogue Banks, Emerald Isle, and Ocracoke Island should avoid the water due to elevated surf and strong currents.

Sunday begins with partly sunny skies and highs near 81°F, but expect showers to arrive by afternoon with possible thunderstorms after 8 p.m. Winds remain calm, but storm chances rise into the overnight hours. The region will see heavier rainfall Monday, with a 70% chance of showers and storms on Memorial Day and highs around 75°F.

By Tuesday, scattered showers return, especially in the afternoon, with storms likely again by Tuesday night. Wednesday holds more rain and thunderstorms after 2 p.m., with slightly warmer temps nearing 82°F.

Road Safety Note: U.S. Route 70 and NC Highway 24 could see reduced visibility and hydroplaning risk during downpours Monday and Tuesday.

Summer Preview: By Thursday, showers linger, but warmer temps begin pushing toward the upper 70s and low 80s — a classic early summer pattern. Expect this unsettled stretch to persist into late week.

Check for weather updates daily, especially if traveling or planning outdoor Memorial Day events. Weather alerts remain possible as new systems develop.
