Boone, NC – The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of western North Carolina, including Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties, effective from 1 a.m. Monday through 1 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the NWS, total snow accumulations of up to 3 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts near 4 inches possible along the highest peaks and ridgelines. Areas below 3,500 feet could see around one inch of snow, mainly early Monday morning.
Forecasters warn that snow-covered roads and reduced visibility will make travel dangerous throughout Monday, especially along U.S. 19E, NC-80, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Isolated power outages are also possible due to the weight of wet snow in higher elevations.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time for travel, and monitor 511 for road updates. Residents should also prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions, particularly in the mountains around Newland, Burnsville, and Spruce Pine.
Snow is expected to taper off late Monday night, but freezing temperatures could lead to icy patches into early Tuesday morning.
