Charlotte, N.C.- After a fatal stabbing on the Lynx Light Rail on Aug. 22, 2025, Charlotte officials and residents are raising concerns about public transportation safety.
All LYNX Blue Line station platforms are equipped with blue light emergency phones, security cameras and lights. The emergency phones connect directly to 911 and automatically provide the operator with the caller’s location.
Each LYNX Blue Line and the City LYNX Gold Line train car have cameras.
The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) offers the CATS See Say app for iPhones and Androids, which allows riders to report suspicious behaviors or activities.
In case of an emergency, riders are advised to press the Passenger Assistance Emergency button,a large red button located on train car walls,. and wait for the conductor’s instructions.
Passengers should remain on the train until told otherwise. When evacuating, they should look both ways before exiting and leave bulky items behind.
Officials also urge riders to stay alert while waiting for a train or bus. If you feel you are being followed, seek out a CATS employee, security guard, police officer or family member for assistance.
Travelling in groups is encouraged, and riders are advised not to leave family or friends behind. During trips, passengers should keep personal belongings and children close.
