Avery County, NC – An ice storm warning is in effect for Avery County and the high elevations of Burke County until 7 a.m. Wednesday, with significant ice accumulation expected to create hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, ice accumulations of around a quarter-inch are expected, with areas along and east of Highway 221 seeing up to half an inch. The ice could make roads treacherous and impassable, especially during Tuesday’s morning and evening commutes.
The storm poses a risk of power outages due to the weight of the ice on tree limbs and power lines. Residents are urged to prepare for possible disruptions and avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is required, officials recommend keeping an emergency kit with food, water, and a flashlight in the vehicle.
Authorities advise checking road conditions before traveling by calling 511. Residents should also stay updated on the latest weather advisories and prepare for falling tree branches and other ice-related hazards.
