Greenville, South Carolina – Damaging mountain winds are expected to impact northwest North Carolina beginning Monday afternoon, prompting a High Wind Warning for Avery County.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a High Wind Warning is in effect from 1 p.m. Monday until 7 a.m. EST Tuesday for Avery County, including Banner Elk, Newland, and Ingalls.
Forecasters expect northwest winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour, especially along exposed ridges and higher elevations. These winds are strong enough to down trees and power lines, leading to the potential for widespread power outages.
Travel may become hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as tractor-trailers, RVs, and delivery trucks. Sudden gusts and crosswinds could make driving difficult on mountain roads, bridges, and open stretches of highway.
The National Weather Service warns that the strongest winds are likely Monday afternoon through the overnight hours, gradually easing Tuesday morning as the warning expires. Residents in mountain communities should be prepared for falling limbs, blowing debris, and possible road blockages.
Officials urge residents to secure outdoor objects, including holiday decorations and lightweight furniture, before winds increase. Those who rely on electrically powered medical equipment are encouraged to review backup plans in case of outages.
Drivers are advised to limit unnecessary travel during peak wind periods, reduce speed, and remain alert for downed trees or power lines.
