Parts of western North Carolina remain under urgent weather alerts early Tuesday as damaging winds and dangerously cold wind chills impact mountain communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a High Wind Warning remains in effect for Avery County until 7 a.m. EST, with northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts reaching up to 60 mph. A Cold Weather Advisory continues until 10 a.m. EST, with wind chills ranging from 5 to 10 degrees below zero, and as low as 15 below zero at the highest elevations.
Communities affected include Banner Elk, Newland, and Ingalls, where the combination of strong winds and extreme cold is creating hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service warns that damaging winds may down trees and power lines, with widespread power outages possible. Travel may be especially difficult for high-profile vehicles during the strongest gusts.
The extreme wind chills significantly increase the risk of hypothermia for anyone exposed to the elements without proper protection. Even short periods outdoors may become dangerous, particularly at higher elevations.
Residents are urged to remain indoors if possible, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for possible power disruptions. Those who must travel should use caution and wear layered clothing, including hats and gloves.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later this morning as winds weaken and temperatures begin to recover, but officials advise continued monitoring of local weather updates.
